When you think of fall, you probably picture vibrant leaves, crisp air, and cozy sweaters. But for those of us living in subtropical climates—like I do on the barrier islands of South Carolina—fall might not feel as traditional. That doesn’t mean we can’t embrace the season in our scrapbooks! Even if the leaves aren’t changing colors, we can still create beautiful fall-themed albums with a few fun techniques. Here’s how I do it.

Even if nature isn’t providing you with the classic orange, red, and yellow tones, you can still bring them into your scrapbook. I love using fall-inspired paper in rich oranges, deep reds, warm yellows, and forest greens. You can also add metallic accents like gold or copper to give your pages a cozy, autumn feel.
For example, in a recent scrapbook I created, I used a combination of orange and green papers, paired with gold-accented leaves I cut out. You can mimic the feel of fall even if your photos feature sandy beaches or green marshes!
Incorporate Seasonal Elements with a Twist
Since we don’t get piles of colorful leaves, I like to use items from my local surroundings. Shells, small pieces of driftwood, or dried flowers can add a natural touch to your layouts while reflecting your own environment. You could even press some autumn flowers to preserve them as embellishments!
Another idea is to include items that represent your personal fall traditions. Whether it’s a fishing trip, boat outing, or just a relaxing day by the water, photos of these moments can be combined with seasonal accents to create a unique fall scrapbook.
Use Textures to Evoke Cozy Fall Vibes
Textures are a great way to add warmth to your pages, even if the temperature outside hasn’t dropped. Consider layering your layouts with fabric swatches, such as burlap, lace, or even velvet, to create a tactile feel reminiscent of cozy sweaters and scarves.
I like adding small pockets or envelopes made from fabric to my scrapbook pages. These not only add a soft, cozy element but can also be used to tuck in extra photos or keepsakes, making your scrapbook more interactive.
Get Creative with Embellishments
If you’re feeling crafty, why not make your own fall embellishments? I love cutting out pumpkins, leaves, and acorns from paper and adding little details with ink or watercolor to make them pop. You can also use stamps or stencils to add a rustic, fall-themed look to your pages.
And don’t forget to mix in some local flair! I like to combine traditional fall shapes with elements that represent where I live, like sand dollars or palm trees, giving my scrapbook a personal, coastal twist on the season.
Capture Your Version of Fall
Remember, fall looks different for everyone. Your scrapbook doesn’t have to match what you see on Pinterest or in magazines. Use the elements that feel like fall to you, whether that’s a warm sunset by the water, a weekend fishing trip, or a family picnic outdoors. Your scrapbook should reflect your unique experiences, even if they don’t include the classic fall scenery.
Creating fall-themed scrapbooks when you live in a subtropical climate can be a fun challenge. By playing with colors, textures, and local materials, you can capture the feeling of autumn while staying true to your environment. Plus, the mix of traditional and personal elements makes your scrapbook even more meaningful.
Happy scrapbooking this fall, y’all!
