Safety
First and foremost is Safety. The safety rules really depend on the age of the child or children. Have age- appropriate scissors for them to use and make sure the glue is non-toxic. Other supplies to gather are stickers, ephemera, stamps that are child friendly.
Have a Plan
Decide on a theme. Your child or children can help decide on a theme for the scrapbook or pages of the scrapbook you are creating. Brainstorming ideas is a fun way to include them in the planning. Besides, including them in the planning and brainstorming activities are important for learning to become a team player.
Then decide if you are using pictures already printed or do you want the youngster to take pictures with their phone or disposable camera – from their point of view. They will love creating a scrapbook using photographs they took on their own.
Once you have a theme, then other supplies will be easier to collect. With safety, a theme, and decorative bits, you are ready to begin.
Art Through Scrapbooking
Many skills can be taught and learned through scrapbooking. Younger children can develop their fine motor skills through scrapbooking activities. You can also teach them about shapes, textures, and colors. Older children can learn about creative writing, storytelling and art composition. If you are using existing photographs in your scrapbook, your child or children will learn about their family and the importance of family by listening to the stories of events, trips, and celebrations.
Time for Scrapbooking
Depending on the age of the child or children, planning time for scrapbooking can be challenging with everyone’s busy schedules. However, scrapbooking is time friendly. If you see that your child is finished creating for the day or must stop due to other commitments, simply store their unfinished project for another day. There are clear plastic 12 x 12 storage bins you can get from most craft stores that can be used for project storage.
Scrapbooking with children is a fun way to spend time together to create something that can be passed down from generation to generation. And scrapbooking may become a new tradition that is passed down, too!
